Origins
The A9 of 2016 was Dongfeng's statement sedan: a full-size flagship on PSA's platform — the French alliance's contribution — dressed in deliberate ministerial dignity for the official-car market Beijing's procurement policies were steering domestic. Refinement targeted Audi's fleet dominance; sales stayed ceremonial, as with most such flagships from the state groups. Its significance was positional: each giant needed a sovereign saloon to demonstrate capability and claim procurement legitimacy, and the A9 was Dongfeng's entry in that quiet competition. The segment's real future belonged to Hongqi's revival; the A9 remains a handsome artefact of the moment every SOE built its own head of state. Flagships built for protocol rarely sell; they exist to be possible, and the A9 was.
