Origins

The eπ 007 of 2024 launched Dongfeng's eπ (e-Pi) brand into the electric mainstream: a sleek fastback saloon in pure-electric and range-extended forms, contesting the mid-size class the startups had dominated — pricing and specification aimed directly at the Tesla-and-newcomer set, with the state group's manufacturing scale beneath. It represented the SOE counteroffensive phase: legacy giants deploying dedicated EV brands with credible products after ceding the segment's first innings. Volume built steadily in the brutal domestic market. The 007's importance is systemic — evidence that China's old-guard manufacturers could productionise competitive EVs at speed once the strategic decision finally arrived. The startups taught the market to want EVs; the giants are now teaching it to buy them everywhere.
