Origins

Ducati did not set out to build motorcycles. Before the war it made radio components and electrical equipment, and by 1945 its Borgo Panigale works had been flattened by Allied bombing. What saved it was a tiny engine designed by a Turin lawyer, Aldo Farinelli, and intended to be bolted to an ordinary bicycle.

Design and engineering

The Cucciolo — Italian for puppy, after the sound it made — was a 48cc four-stroke single with an unusual pullrod valve arrangement, driving through a two-speed gearbox to the bicycle's rear wheel. Ducati took over production in 1946 and found itself with a product perfectly matched to the moment. Italy was broke, fuel was scarce, and public transport was in ruins. A device that could turn a bicycle anyone already owned into powered transport, at almost no running cost, sold in enormous numbers.

In production

The engine kept Ducati alive and pulled it into a business it had never planned to enter. Complete Cucciolo-powered machines followed the clip-on kits, then proper lightweight motorcycles, and by the time production ended in 1958 the company had a factory, a dealer network and an engineering culture built around small, precise, high-revving engines. Every Ducati since — the desmodromic valve gear, the obsession with the top end of the rev range, Borgo Panigale itself — descends from a bicycle motor sold to people who could not afford anything better.
