Origins

Geely's timing was good. The Boyue arrived in 2016, when Chinese buyers were switching to SUVs faster than almost any market in history, and it was among the first Geely models shaped by the design and engineering talent the company had brought in after acquiring Volvo. A conventional five-door compact SUV with front- or all-wheel drive, it undercut the joint-venture competition without looking like it.

Design and engineering

It sold heavily at home and then travelled. Exported as the Atlas in Russia and the Emgrand X7 Sport elsewhere, it also became the Proton X70 in Malaysia after Geely took a stake in Proton: a Chinese design rebadged as a national car, and a commercial success that reset Proton's fortunes. Updated versions remain in production.
