Origins

Introduced in 1990 to replace the ageing Stellar in Hyundai's Korean range, the Elantra was a conventional front-wheel-drive compact saloon using Mitsubishi-derived engineering, sold as the Lantra in much of Europe and Australia and as the Avante at home. The name confusion lasted for years and did nothing for its identity.

Design and engineering

Early cars competed on price and equipment rather than merit, and reviews reflected that. The change came gradually through the 2000s as Hyundai brought engine and transmission development in-house and hired designers with reputations to protect, until by the fifth and sixth generations the car was being cross-shopped against the Civic and Corolla rather than undercutting them.

In production

The seventh-generation CN7 of 2020 took the opposite approach to its bland predecessors, with sharply creased sides and a low roofline, and added an N version with a turbocharged engine and a chassis developed by Hyundai's performance division. It is now one of the world's highest-volume compact cars, which is a considerable distance from where it started.
