Origins

Emissions regulation had made a large naturally aspirated engine difficult to justify, and most of Lamborghini's rivals had turbocharged or downsized. The Revuelto, launched in 2023 to replace the Aventador, took the other route: keep the V12, add electricity, and use the hybrid system to cover what the regulations demanded.

Design and engineering

The engine is new rather than carried over, a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 designated L545, lighter than the Aventador's unit and revving higher. Behind it sits an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox mounted transversely across the back of the car, an arrangement that freed the space along the centre of the chassis for the battery. Three electric motors do the rest: two driving the front wheels individually, giving torque vectoring and all-wheel drive without a propshaft, and one integrated with the gearbox. The car can run on electricity alone at low speed, and the front motors also provide reverse.

In production

The structure is a new carbon fibre monocoque, and Mitja Borkert's bodywork borrows the Y-shaped lighting motif and the deep central spine from the Sian and Terzo Millennio concepts. The name, in keeping with company practice, belongs to a fighting bull.

Legacy

What it demonstrates is that the twelve-cylinder Lamborghini has a future beyond 2030, which was not obvious a few years ago. Production runs at Sant'Agata Bolognese alongside the Urus and Huracan's successor.
