Origins

The 09 is the largest thing Lynk and Co makes, and unlike its siblings it does not use the compact CMA platform. It sits on SPA, the scalable architecture Volvo developed for the XC90 and the 90-series cars, which makes it a full-size three-row SUV with a longitudinal engine and the crash structure that goes with a flagship Volvo.

Design and engineering

Launched in 2021 and designed under Jon Radbrink and Lars Falk, it uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four from the Volvo engine family in mild-hybrid form, or a plug-in hybrid version, driving through an eight-speed automatic or a three-speed hybrid transmission. Six and seven-seat layouts are offered, and the interior is the most elaborate the brand has attempted.

In production

Its commercial logic is unusually plain. Geely owns both companies and both cars are built to the same structural standards, but the Lynk and Co badge carries none of Volvo's price expectations, so the 09 offers most of what an XC90 offers for a good deal less money. That works in China, where the brand is new and the badge carries no baggage, and it is precisely why the model has not been offered where Volvo sells strongly.
