Origins

The TGL covers the distribution end of MAN's catalogue — the seven- to twelve-tonne rigids that run city deliveries, municipal work and short-haul freight. It arrived in 2005 to replace the L2000, and its logic is the logic of the whole TG range: rather than develop a separate small truck, MAN gave it a scaled version of the cab architecture and electrical systems already engineered for the heavy TGA.

Design and engineering

Power comes from the compact end of MAN's diesel family, the four-cylinder D0834 and six-cylinder D0836, with manual gearboxes as standard and the TipMatic automated transmission as the option most fleets now take. Forward control keeps the wheelbase short for the body length, which is what matters when the working day is spent in loading bays.

In production

It is not a glamorous vehicle, and it was never meant to be. Its value to MAN is that it lets a fleet buy everything from a delivery rigid to a long-haul tractor from one dealer, with drivers who already know where the switches are.
