Origins

When MAN split its heavy range in 2007, the TGX took the long-distance work and the TGS took construction and regional haulage. The distinction was mostly the cab: the TGX got the wide, flat-floored sleepers that matter when a driver lives in the vehicle for a week at a time, along with the highest specification of the D20, D26 and, at the top, the V8 engines.

Design and engineering

It was named International Truck of the Year for 2008, and MAN kept it current with a long-running efficiency programme — aerodynamic packages, driveline calibration, predictive cruise control using GPS map data to lift and coast over crests. In heavily fuel-conscious European fleet trials the TGX became a regular fixture near the top of the table.

In production

A thoroughly new generation arrived in 2020, developed with an unusual amount of driver consultation: MAN interviewed several hundred drivers across Europe before fixing the cab layout, and the resulting design moved the gear selector to a stalk to free the tunnel, reworked the mirrors for visibility, and simplified the dash. It took the Truck of the Year title again for 2021 — a rare double for a single nameplate — and remains the vehicle at the top of MAN's range.
