Origins

The W124 replaced the W123 in 1984, and it inherited both that car's reputation for durability and a design brief that assumed a twenty-year service life. What it added was aerodynamics and structure: Bruno Sacco's team produced a body with a drag coefficient well ahead of its class, using flush glass, a tapered tail and the ribbed side cladding that became a Mercedes signature of the decade, and a shell stiff enough to support saloon, estate, coupé, cabriolet and a six-door limousine without compromise.

Design and engineering

Sacco's guiding principle — that a Mercedes should look neither dated at the end of its life nor out of place beside its predecessors — is nowhere better demonstrated. Forty years on the shape reads as neutral rather than old.

In production

The engineering was famously thorough and famously expensive. Estates got self-levelling rear suspension as standard, the multi-link rear axle came from the W201 programme, and the cars were assembled to tolerances that made them profitable to sell only because buyers kept them. Taxi fleets in Germany and long-distance operators in Africa and the Middle East ran them past a million kilometres, which is a substantial part of why the model's reputation is what it is.

Legacy

The halo car was the 500 E, developed and assembled by Porsche at Zuffenhausen because Mercedes had no line capacity for a hand-widened V8 saloon; each shell travelled between the two companies' plants several times during construction. In 1993 the range was renamed E-Class, making the W124 both the last of the old naming and the first E-Class. Saloon production ended in 1995, the cabriolet in 1997. It is generally regarded as the last Mercedes built without reference to cost — a claim that is not quite fair to what followed, but which persists because so many W124s are still running.
