Origins

Sitting above the ZS in SAIC's revived MG range, the HS is a compact crossover built on the same corporate architecture as the Roewe RX5 and sold from 2018 in China, Britain, Australia, Thailand and much of Latin America. It replaced the GS, which had made little impression outside a handful of markets.

Design and engineering

The pitch is space and equipment for the money: a large cabin for the class, a long list of standard kit, and pricing set below the mainstream European and Japanese competition. A plug-in hybrid version followed and became the volume seller in several European markets, where company car tax rules rewarded it heavily. A second generation arrived in 2024, larger again and more conventionally styled.

In production

The HS does not trade on heritage. It trades on the octagon badge being familiar enough to lower the barrier for buyers who would not otherwise consider a Chinese brand, which has proved to be worth a great deal.
