Suez did it. When the 1956 crisis put petrol back on ration in Britain and buyers began deserting to German bubble cars, BMC's Leonard Lord told Alec Issigonis to design something small, four-seat and properly engineered. The answer, launched in August 1959, took a ten-foot car and gave over roughly 80 percent of its floor area to passengers and luggage.
