01

Origins

The Countryman is where the brand's central contradiction became a business plan. Launched in 2010 as Mini's first SUV and its first car with four doors and optional all-wheel drive, it took a name that had belonged to a small 1960s estate and applied it to something considerably larger than any Mini before it.

Design and engineering

Enthusiasts objected. Buyers did not, and the Countryman quickly became one of the brand's best sellers, particularly in markets where a raised ride height and a usable back seat matter more than kerb weight. The ALL4 four-wheel-drive system gave it genuine bad-weather ability, and a rally programme plus a John Cooper Works version provided some justification for the styling.

In production

Each generation has grown. The second, from 2017, moved to BMW's UKL platform and added a plug-in hybrid. The third, from 2024, is built in Germany rather than the Netherlands and is offered as a full electric. The Countryman now anchors the range, which is another way of saying it pays for the small cars people actually associate with the name.
