By 2016 Perodua had spent two decades building nothing but hatchbacks and small MPVs. The Bezza, styled under Muhamad Zamuren Musa and built at Serendah, was the company's first sedan, and it existed because a substantial slice of Malaysian buyers still equate a separate boot with having arrived.

Mechanically it borrows from the Axia and Myvi: a 1.0-litre 1KR-VE three-cylinder or a 1.3-litre 1NR-VE four, front-wheel drive, and a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Perodua concentrated its effort on fuel economy and on aerodynamic detail work, which is unusual attention for a car in this class and reflects how tightly Malaysian running costs are scrutinised.

The timing helped. Ride-hailing was expanding fast in Kuala Lumpur, and drivers needed a cheap four-door with a boot big enough for luggage. The Bezza became a common sight in that role as well as a first family car, and remains in production.
