Origins

France in 1948 was rebuilding, short of steel and short of fuel, and its car industry was being steered by government plans that told each manufacturer roughly what it was allowed to make. Peugeot's answer was the 203, and for the first several years of its life it was the only car the company built. Everything depended on it.

Design and engineering

The engineering was ambitious for the circumstances. The 203 used unitary construction rather than a separate chassis, and its 1290 cc four-cylinder had a hemispherical combustion chamber and wet cylinder liners, giving good efficiency and a long service life. Independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering completed a specification that was more modern than the modest styling suggested. Buyers noticed the durability first: these were cars bought by people who could not afford to replace them.

In production

Peugeot built the range outwards rather than upwards, offering saloon, estate, coupe and cabriolet bodies from the same platform and the same 1290 cc engine, which kept tooling costs low and spare parts interchangeable. Assembly also took place in Australia. By the time production ended in 1960, 685,628 had been made, and the 203 had run alongside its own replacement, the 403, for five years, because customers kept ordering it. Rural France in particular held on to the model long after Paris had moved on.

Legacy

It established the pattern Peugeot would follow for decades: conservative styling, over-engineered mechanicals, and a reputation built on cars that were still working long after fashion had moved on.
