Origins

By the early 1990s Porsche was close to failing. It was building three unrelated model lines in small volumes with obsolete production methods, the 968 and 928 were selling poorly, and annual output had collapsed to a level that could not support the company. Wendelin Wiedeking brought in Japanese production consultants, tore up the manufacturing process, and bet the firm on a new entry-level car.

Design and engineering

The Boxster arrived in 1996: a two-seat roadster with a flat six mounted amidships, drawing on the 550 Spyder for its proportions and its name, which contracts boxer and roadster. Mid-engined layout gave it a natural balance the 911 had spent thirty years chasing, and Porsche was careful to make it clearly quicker to change direction and clearly slower in a straight line than its senior model.

In production

The commercial masterstroke was shared engineering. The Boxster and the water-cooled 996-generation 911 launched a year apart with common front structures, headlamps and a great deal of internal hardware. That halved development cost and rescued the balance sheet, and it is also why 996 owners spent years being told their car had a Boxster's face. Additional capacity came from Valmet in Finland and later Osnabruck.

Legacy

The Cayman coupe joined in 2005, stiffer and eventually the enthusiast's choice. Production of the line continued until 2025, by which point the car Porsche built to survive had spent nearly three decades being the best-handling thing it made.
