Origins

Renault committed to electric vehicles earlier and harder than most, and the Zoe was the mass-market half of that bet: a supermini built at Flins from December 2012, designed as an EV from the start rather than converted from a petrol car, with Jean Semeriva credited for the styling.

Design and engineering

Two decisions shaped its life. The first was the battery lease, under which buyers bought the car and rented the pack monthly, which cut the purchase price to something close to a conventional supermini and removed the fear of degradation. The second was the Chameleon charger, an AC system that could take a wide range of charging speeds through one socket, which suited European kerbside and destination charging but left the car without fast DC charging in its early years.

In production

It worked. For much of the second half of the 2010s the Zoe was the best-selling electric car in Europe, and later versions roughly doubled the usable battery capacity of the first. It also became a familiar sight in car-sharing and short-lease fleets.

Legacy

The ending was harsh. In a 2021 Euro NCAP assessment the Zoe scored zero stars, having lost side airbag protection for the head and lagging on driver assistance, and the reputational damage to an ageing design was hard to repair. Production stopped in March 2024, with the retro-styled Renault 5 E-Tech taking its place on the same site.
