Origins

SEAT arrived late to the crossover market, having spent years arguing that the Altea was enough. The Ateca, launched in 2016, admitted the mistake: a conventional compact SUV on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, sharing its structure with the Tiguan and the Skoda Karoq, with transverse petrol and diesel engines and front or all-wheel drive.

Design and engineering

The body, drawn by Xavier Guinart under Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, is tighter and less bulbous than most of its class, and the car earned a reputation for handling better than an SUV needs to. It is built at Skoda's Kvasiny plant in the Czech Republic, with additional assembly in Algeria and Iran.

In production

It sold immediately and heavily, becoming one of SEAT's most profitable products. The Cupra Ateca of 2018 also has a footnote in company history: with a 300 PS turbo four and all-wheel drive, it was the first model launched under Cupra as a standalone brand rather than a SEAT trim level.
