Origins
Before 1985 a big Japanese sports motorcycle was a heavy thing with a steel frame, a comfortable riding position and a fairing bolted on for looks. The GSX-R750 was built to a different question: what would happen if a manufacturer sold something close to an endurance racer with lights on it. Suzuki built an aluminium twin-spar frame, used a full fairing shaped like the works bikes, put clip-on bars low and made the whole machine dramatically lighter than anything comparable.
