The Empow of 2021 broke Trumpchi's sedan conservatism: a sharply creased compact sports saloon — racing-inspired styling cues, turbo power, manual-adjacent marketing — aimed at young Chinese buyers the brand's dignified saloons never reached. It arrived as domestic design confidence peaked and the combustion sports-compact enjoyed a final flourish before electrification absorbed youth aspiration. Sales validated the swagger at modest scale. The Empow documents the segment's Indian summer and GAC's design maturity — a state group building a genuinely fashionable petrol sedan for fun, precisely as the industry's centre of gravity departed for batteries. Its likeliest legacy: the last new combustion nameplate in its class to matter. Timing made it an elegy; the swagger made it a good one.
