Origins
Trumpchi launched in 2010 with the GA5: Guangzhou Auto's own-brand debut, built on the Alfa Romeo 166 platform acquired via the group's Fiat connections — Italian architecture underpinning a dignified domestic saloon for the state group's indigenous-brand obligations. The engineering inheritance gave it credible dynamics; the badge began accumulating the government-fleet and taxi presence that anchors such launches. From this foundation GAC's brand would grow into one of the SOE sector's genuine successes, its GS-series crossovers later setting domestic benchmarks. The GA5's borrowed-platform pragmatism — Turin's leftovers, Guangzhou's future — typifies how China's giants bootstrapped: legitimacy first, originality funded by the volumes legitimacy bought. Alfa's engineers would recognise little of what followed, and built more of it than they know.
