Origins

Farm-equipment makers built trucks, and truck makers occasionally built something you could put a family in. The Travelall was International Harvester's version of that idea: the cab and front sheetmetal of its pickups, extended into a full-length steel wagon body with seating for up to nine.

Design and engineering

It arrived in 1953 alongside the R-series pickups and stayed in production, through successive redesigns, until 1975. Its most useful advantage came in 1961, when the new generation offered a driver's-side rear door — Chevrolet's Suburban would not get four conventional doors until the 1970s. Buyers could have rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, six-cylinder or V8 power, and a chassis rated to carry loads that would have embarrassed a station wagon.

It was never a volume seller. International's dealer network was built around agriculture and heavy trucks rather than families, and the company priced the Travelall as the working vehicle it was. When IH pulled back from the light-truck market in the mid-1970s the Travelall went with the pickups, leaving the Scout to carry the company's consumer business alone for another five years.
