Origins
Replacing the Beetle was a task Volkswagen had failed at for more than a decade, and by the early 1970s the company's survival depended on getting it right. The Golf, launched in May 1974, reversed every principle of the car it succeeded: water-cooled instead of air-cooled, front engine instead of rear, front-wheel drive instead of rear, a two-box hatchback instead of a curved saloon. Giugiaro's body was all straight lines and flat surfaces, which was cheap to tool and looked deliberately modern.
