Origins

Everything Volvo had built for two decades sent drive to the rear. The 850, developed under the internal name Galaxy at a cost that came close to breaking the company, sent it to the front — and did so with a five-cylinder engine mounted transversely, an unusual solution born from the need for a smooth, torquey unit that would still fit across a compact engine bay. Volvo added its own delta-link rear axle to give a measure of passive rear steer, and made a side-impact protection system standard, later adding side airbags.

Design and engineering

Jan Wilsgaard's styling kept the family squareness but softened it, and the estate proved as significant as the saloon. In 1994 Volvo went touring car racing in Britain with the wagon rather than the four-door — an idea from Tom Walkinshaw Racing that looked like a joke on the entry list and stopped looking like one when Rickard Rydell and Jan Lammers ran at the front. The rules soon changed to bar estates, but the point had been made, and the advertising wrote itself.

In production

On the road the range ran from mild 2.0 and 2.4 versions to the turbocharged T-5 and the 850 R, which delivered performance that few expected from a car shaped like a filing cabinet. A five-cylinder diesel joined later. Around 716,903 were built between 1991 and 1997.

Legacy

When the 850 was replaced by the S70 and V70 in 1997, the change was mostly cosmetic: the platform, the engine architecture and the rear axle carried on. That family of five-cylinder, front-drive Volvos took the company through the Ford years and into the modern era, which makes the 850 the point where the old Volvo ended and the current one began.
