Brand History

The Volvo Story

Volvo — Latin for 'I roll' — was founded in 1927 with the conviction that cars must be built around safety. It invented the three-point seatbelt in 1959 and gave the patent away free, later pioneering side-impact protection and city auto-braking. Sold by Ford to China's Geely in 2010, Volvo has thrived as a premium, safety-led, increasingly electric brand.
