Origins
Volvo came late to the large SUV, and used the delay to think about what went wrong with the ones already on sale. Rollovers were the obvious weakness, so the XC90 arrived in 2002 with roll stability control that measured body angle and intervened before the car reached the tipping point, a boron steel roof structure designed to survive an inversion, and a front chassis member set at a height meant to engage properly with a smaller car in a collision rather than ride over it. Seven seats and a car-derived front-drive or four-wheel-drive layout did the rest.
