01

Origins

Voyah was created by Dongfeng in 2020 as an attempt to sell Chinese cars at premium prices, and the Free was the brand's opening statement: a mid-size five-door SUV launched in January 2021, offered from the start either as a battery electric car or as an extended-range hybrid with a petrol engine acting purely as a generator. Giving buyers both drivetrains under one body was a hedge against patchy charging infrastructure and became a common Chinese strategy afterwards.

Design and engineering

The car was pitched on equipment and material quality rather than novelty — a large tablet-style interior, air suspension on higher trims and strong straight-line performance from its dual-motor versions. Voyah used the Free as its export spearhead too, sending it to Norway and other European markets as an early test of whether a state-owned Chinese group could sell above the value segment abroad. It remains the brand's best-known model.
