Origins

WEY — Great Wall's premium marque, carrying founder Wei Jianjun's own surname as accountability theatre — launched in 2017 with the VV7: a sleek mid-size crossover with upscale cabin, turbocharged power and pricing pitched between domestic mainstream and joint-venture territory. The proposition tested whether Haval's SUV empire could support a luxury superstructure. Early sales impressed before the segment's brutal competition compressed them; the brand iterated toward hybrid technology flagships. The VV7 remains the founding statement — Chinese private industry's most personal branding gamble, the chairman's name on the grille as warranty — and a foundation for WEY's later, more sophisticated technology-led identity. Naming a brand for oneself concentrates the mind wonderfully; Wei Jianjun's gamble still trades on it.
