Origins

The 510 of 2017 added the missing ingredient to Baojun's formula: fashion. The subcompact crossover's split-lamp face and contrast-roof styling looked years more expensive than its price, and China's young first-car buyers responded massively — the 510 ranked among the country's top-selling SUVs outright, twice territory value brands never reached. SGMW's manufacturing kept the economics honest beneath the design confidence. The 510 demonstrated the segment's evolved truth: entry buyers wanted aspiration, not just transport, and would reward whoever priced it lowest. Its silhouette became ubiquitous from provincial capitals to export markets, and its success completed Baojun's brief, remarkable reign over China's affordable-car imagination. Design, it demonstrated, was the cheapest expensive feature in the catalogue.
