Origins

The Air EV took the thinking behind Wuling's Mini EV and made it exportable. It remains a tiny three-door city car with a rear motor driving the rear wheels, styled by an in-house team of Gao Chenwei, Li Mu and Xia Sheng into a boxy, upright shape with a full-width light bar, but it was engineered with proper equipment levels and a connected infotainment system for markets outside China.

Design and engineering

Indonesia was the target. SAIC-GM-Wuling built it at Cikarang in West Java, making it one of the first electric cars assembled in the country, and the timing was deliberate: Indonesia hosted the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022, and a fleet of Air EVs was used as official transport for delegates. That gave the model national visibility no advertising budget could buy, and it became one of Indonesia's best-selling EVs.

In production

Assembly later extended to Halol in Gujarat for the Indian market, where it is sold under a different badge. For Wuling, it proved that the cheap-electric-city-car formula travels.
