Origins
SAIC-GM-Wuling launched this in 2020 with an argument almost nobody else in the industry was making: that most electric cars were being designed for people who already owned a car, and that the real volume lay with buyers stepping up from an electric scooter or a three-wheeler. So the Mini EV was built to the cheapest specification that could still be called a car — a tiny four-seat, three-door hatchback, rear-motor and rear-wheel drive, with a small battery, modest speed, and at launch neither airbags nor air conditioning on the base version.
