Origins

The Hongguang arrived in 2010 from SAIC-GM-Wuling, the joint venture between General Motors, SAIC and Guangxi's Wuling, and it was engineered against a single number: the price a small trader in a Chinese county town could afford. It is a compact MPV in classification, but in practice a light, front-engined, rear-wheel-drive five-door van with seats, built to carry seven people or a load of goods over indifferent roads with the minimum of complication.

Design and engineering

That was exactly what a rapidly motorising country wanted. The Hongguang sold in numbers that placed it among the best-selling vehicles anywhere in the world in the early 2010s, outselling most European family cars several times over while remaining almost unknown outside China. It became the default private-hire vehicle, delivery van and family car across large parts of the interior.

In production

Its real legacy is the name. "Hongguang" became a badge Wuling could attach to anything aimed at the same buyer, and when the company decided to build the cheapest possible electric city car a decade later, it called that the Hongguang Mini EV — and repeated the trick on a different scale.
