01

Origins

The EX30 is Volvo's attempt to make an electric car that is genuinely small — a subcompact crossover on a five-door hatchback body, rear-motor and rear-wheel drive in its standard form, with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version above it. That layout is unusual at this end of the market and gives the car a tight turning circle and, in twin-motor form, unexpectedly serious acceleration.

Design and engineering

Volvo built the launch case around embodied emissions rather than range, claiming the lowest lifetime carbon footprint of any car it had made, helped by recycled aluminium, steel and plastics in the structure and trim. The interior takes the argument further by removing almost everything: no instrument binnacle, a single central screen carrying speed and controls, a soundbar across the dashboard instead of door speakers.

In production

Production began in China at Zhangjiakou, with a second source added at Ghent in Belgium partly in response to European tariffs on Chinese-built EVs, and further assembly in Malaysia. A raised Cross Country version and a convertible concept followed. As Volvo's cheapest electric car it carries the job of taking the brand down-market without cheapening it — the role the C30 was once meant to play, and which it names as this car's predecessor.
