01

Origins

Chery's earlier SUVs had a difficult reputation outside China — cheap, roughly finished, and easy to dismiss. The Tiggo 7, launched in 2016, was the point at which that stopped being fair. It was a conventional compact crossover, but the design was coherent, the interior was competitive with mainstream Japanese and Korean rivals, and the engineering was developed under a European-influenced product process.

Design and engineering

The Tiggo 7 Pro that followed pushed further, with better materials, a large touchscreen and Chery's own turbocharged engines and dual-clutch transmission. Priced well below equivalent Toyota and Volkswagen products, it became one of Chery's principal export models, sold in Latin America, the Middle East, Russia, Southeast Asia and South Africa, and assembled locally in several markets.

In production

It is not a car with a dramatic story. Its significance is that it is unremarkable in the way that a mainstream global crossover is supposed to be, which was not something a Chery could previously claim.
