01

Origins

The decision that defined this car was made in a meeting rather than a wind tunnel. Ford had an electric crossover in development, judged it too anonymous to succeed, and chose to attach the Mustang name and styling cues to it — the three-bar tail lamps, the tri-bar indicators, the long-bonnet proportions translated onto a taller body. The reaction from Mustang owners was predictably hostile, and Ford went ahead anyway on the reasoning that an electric vehicle with no emotional pull would sell to nobody.

Design and engineering

Underneath is a purpose-built electric platform rather than a converted petrol car: a battery in the floor, a rear motor as standard for rear-wheel drive, and a second front motor for all-wheel-drive versions. The GT models are quick enough to justify the badge in a straight line, if not in the way a Mustang traditionally earns it. The interior broke with Ford practice by centring on a large portrait touchscreen with a physical volume dial embedded in it.

In production

It launched for the 2021 model year, built at Cuautitlán in Mexico with a period of Chinese production for local sale, and became one of the better-selling electric vehicles in America outside Tesla. It also served as the platform for Ford's first electric police vehicles. Whether borrowing the name was worth the goodwill spent remains an argument among the people who care most, but the commercial logic held: the Mach-E sold, and a differently badged version of the same car probably would not have.
