The Tunland of 2011 was Foton's serious pickup: a full-size double-cab with Cummins diesel power — the joint venture's calling card — aimed simultaneously at China's slowly liberalising pickup market and the export territories where Toyota's Hilux ruled. Australia, South America and Africa received it at value prices with credible componentry. Successive generations sharpened refinement as China's pickup restrictions eased and the segment's lifestyle turn arrived. The Tunland established Foton among the Chinese pickup exporters taken seriously abroad — the Cummins badge answering durability questions before they were asked — and built the platform position the company's later electric and G-series trucks would extend. A Cummins badge, it turns out, translates fluently into every language a pickup buyer speaks.
