Origins

Foton — Beijing's commercial-vehicle giant, founded 1996 and swiftly enormous — built the Saga in 2003 among its first light passenger-adjacent products: a compact MPV-van for the small-business market where China's commercial and family needs blurred. The company's centre remained trucks — light Aumarks to heavy Auman tractors, later the Daimler joint venture — but products like the Saga tested consumer waters early. It sold modestly and taught cheaply. Foton's later Gratour MPVs and Tunland pickups descended from these experiments' lessons: the giant learning which adjacencies paid, one modest nameplate at a time, while its truck volumes conquered the actual market. The giant's education in consumer taste started here, inexpensively. Two decades on, the group's consumer lines trace their institutional memory to these first modest lessons in what families, rather than fleets, actually want.
