1979 IH Scout II

01

Origins

International Harvester's product planners spent the late 1950s watching Willys sell Jeeps to people who had no intention of going to war. Their response, developed under styling chief Ted Ornas, was the Scout: a simple steel box on a short wheelbase with a removable top, a folding windscreen, and a four-cylinder engine that was, quite literally, one bank of an IH V8.

Design and engineering

The Scout 80 reached dealers for 1961, five years before Ford's Bronco and long before Chevrolet took the segment seriously. It could be had as a pickup, a half-cab or a full-length wagon, with two- or four-wheel drive, and it was cheap enough to sell to ranchers, utility companies and municipalities as well as to weekend drivers. The Scout 800 followed with more comfort and more engines, including a V8.

In production

The Scout II of 1971 is the version most people picture: longer, squarer, better trimmed, and available with a diesel as well as IH's own V8s. It gained a following in off-road competition, and across the Midwest it became a default farm vehicle. But International was a company with deep structural problems — a punishing strike at the end of the 1970s, heavy losses in agricultural equipment, and no capital to modernise a light vehicle line that had never been its main business. Production ended in 1980 and IH left the consumer market entirely.

Legacy

Surviving Scouts are now restored with the seriousness once reserved for early Broncos, and clean Scout IIs trade for many times what they cost new. The name outlived the company: Volkswagen Group revived it in 2022 for Scout Motors, a new American brand building electric trucks and SUVs.

The facts that define it.
