01

Origins

Most small cars try to look larger and faster than they are. The Soul went the other way. Developed from a concept shown in 2008 and shaped at Kia's California design studio, it was upright, flat-sided and square, with a thick C-pillar and a high roof. The proportions were chosen for interior space and for character, and the car made no attempt to disguise what it was.

02

Design and engineering

Underneath it was conventional: a transverse front engine, front-wheel drive, and a five-door hatchback body that Kia and most regulators later classified as a subcompact crossover, though it never offered all-wheel drive. Practicality came from packaging rather than mechanics.

In production

In the United States it was carried by one of the more effective advertising campaigns of the era, in which computer-animated hamsters drove the car to hip-hop tracks. The campaign ran for years and gave a small, inexpensive Kia genuine cultural presence among young buyers, which was precisely the audience the company had struggled to reach.

Legacy

Three generations followed the same recipe, including a fully electric Soul EV that was among Kia's first mainstream battery models. Production ended in 2025 after the crossover boom left little room for a car that was proudly neither tall nor sporting.

The facts that define it.
