Origins

The Vitara Brezza, launched in January 2016, was the first Maruti Suzuki developed largely by the company's own Indian engineering and design teams rather than adapted from a Japanese product. It slotted into the subcompact crossover class that had been opened up by a tax break for vehicles under four metres, sitting on a front-wheel-drive platform shared with the Baleno hatchback.

Design and engineering

At launch it was sold only with the 1.3-litre diesel. When emissions rules made that engine uneconomic, Maruti did something unusual and simply reversed the offer, going petrol-only from 2020 with a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid unit. Either way the appeal was the same: compact SUV proportions and a high driving position on a light, cheap, front-wheel-drive package that its buyers would never take off tarmac.

In production

It reached the top of its segment quickly and stayed there. A 2022 redesign dropped the Vitara prefix, added a sunroof and a larger touchscreen, and continued the run.
