Origins

This was NIO's first production car and its argument in physical form. A full-size, aluminium-intensive luxury SUV with six or seven seats, launched into a Chinese market where the Tesla Model X was the obvious reference point, it went on sale in late 2017 with deliveries starting the following year.

Design and engineering

The idea underneath it mattered more than the bodywork. NIO decided the battery should be a separate thing from the car. Power Swap stations exchange a depleted pack for a full one in minutes without the driver getting out, and the battery-as-a-service scheme lets buyers lease the pack instead of owning it, which cuts the purchase price and leaves the door open to fitting a larger or newer battery later. Building the station network was ruinously expensive and remains the most distinctive thing about the company.

In production

The cabin introduced NOMI, a small swivelling assistant on the dash that became a brand signature, and the service model leaned heavily on owner clubhouses and events rather than conventional dealers.
