01

Origins

The 208 arrived in March 2012 to replace the 207, a car that had grown heavy and bloated by the standards of its class. Peugeot reversed the trend: the 208 was shorter, lower and significantly lighter than its predecessor, a decision driven by European emissions rules but one that also improved how the car drove.

Design and engineering

It introduced the interior layout Peugeot has used ever since, with a very small steering wheel and an instrument binnacle positioned above it rather than behind, a configuration the company calls i-Cockpit. Opinion on it remains divided along fairly predictable lines, but it gave a mainstream supermini a distinct identity from the driver's seat.

The second generation, launched in 2019, was the more significant car. Built on a platform designed to take petrol, diesel and electric powertrains without compromise, it allowed the battery-electric e-208 to sit in showrooms alongside conventional versions at the same time, in the same body. It was named European Car of the Year for 2020. The model remains in production under Stellantis.
