Origins
BMW bought Rover in 1994 and spent heavily on one thing above all: a genuine executive saloon to replace the Honda-derived 600 and 800. Richard Woolley's design looked back to the Rover P5 and P6 rather than sideways at the Germans, with a rounded, formal body and a cabin of cream dials, wood veneer and chrome that was closer to a period reinterpretation than a retro pastiche. Underneath, the platform, the suspension development and the BMW-designed diesel were serious work.
