Origins
WM Motor — Weltmeister, 'world champion' in borrowed German — launched the EX5 in 2018 as the startup wave's pragmatist: a sensibly priced electric crossover for the mainstream, factory-owned production in Wenzhou rather than contract assembly, and funding rounds that made it briefly one of the sector's best-capitalised players. The EX5 sold in real volumes to fleets and families, ranking among startup EVs' early leaders. The pragmatism thesis — normal car, normal price, normal buyers — contrasted with rivals' premium theatrics. Its later shadow: quality controversies and the company's eventual 2023 collapse would bury the brand, but the EX5's opening years genuinely contested the segment's leadership. For three years, 'world champion' looked less like hubris than a plan.
