Origins

Replacing the Escort was a large problem, because the Escort had ended its life being outclassed by almost everything. Ford's answer in 1998 was to make handling the priority. The Focus used a multi-link rear suspension design Ford called Control Blade — sophisticated and expensive for the class, where a torsion beam was the norm — and the result was a family hatchback that steered and rode better than cars costing considerably more. Reviewers were close to unanimous, and it won European Car of the Year for 1999.

Design and engineering

The styling was the other half. The New Edge language, with its creased surfaces, triangular lamp shapes and high tail, looked startling next to the softened blobs of the mid-1990s and dated far more gracefully than expected. Body styles ran from three- and five-door hatchbacks to a saloon, an estate, and eventually a coupe-cabriolet with a folding hardtop.

In production

Performance versions gave the car a second life. The ST and, above it, the RS became fixtures of European hot-hatch conversation, the Mk3 RS adding four-wheel drive. The Focus also had a long rally career, taking World Rally Championship manufacturers' titles in the early 2000s.

Legacy

Later generations chased global commonality more than driving polish, and the car was gradually squeezed by the industry-wide shift to crossovers. Ford withdrew it from North America and then, in 2025, ended production altogether without a direct replacement, pointing buyers toward the Kuga and its SUV range. For most of its life it was the yardstick by which every other family hatchback was judged.
