Lamborghini had built a high-performance off-roader before. The LM002 of the 1980s, a slab-sided military-derived machine with the Countach's V12 in the nose, sold in tiny numbers and lost money, but it established that the idea was not foreign to the brand. The Urus, shown as a concept in 2012 and in production from 2017, was the commercial version of the same thought.

It sits on the Volkswagen Group's MLB Evo platform, shared with the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Bentley Bentayga, and uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 from the group parts bin with an eight-speed ZF automatic and four-wheel drive. That makes it the first Lamborghini in decades not to use an engine designed in-house, a point critics raised repeatedly. Mitja Borkert's production bodywork disguises the shared underpinnings with the sharp creases, hexagonal detailing and low glasshouse of the sports cars, developing Filippo Perini's earlier concept.

What is not disputable is the effect on the business. The Urus roughly doubled Lamborghini's annual output within a couple of years of launch and rapidly became the company's best-selling model, reaching customers, and particularly markets, that a two-seat supercar never could. The revenue underwrote the development of the V12 hybrids that followed.
