01

Origins

The X9, launched in 2024, is XPeng's attempt at the Chinese luxury MPV — a large seven-seat minivan built to carry executives and families in the segment where the Toyota Alphard set expectations. Styled by Shubham Yadav, it uses a front motor with front-wheel drive or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout, on the company's 800-volt architecture.

Design and engineering

Its most distinctive feature is rear-wheel steering, unusual on a vehicle this shape and used to cut the turning circle to something closer to a hatchback's — a meaningful advantage in Chinese multi-storey car parks. The rest is segment orthodoxy done well: reclining middle-row seats, air suspension, and a very quiet cabin.

In production

An extended-range version followed, using a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder purely as a generator to charge the battery, which removes the range anxiety that had kept some buyers away from a fully electric family vehicle. The X9 has been one of the better-selling electric MPVs in China and is part of XPeng's export programme.
