Origins

McLaren Automotive's first car as an independent volume manufacturer had a great deal riding on it. Launched in 2011 as the MP4-12C, it was aimed directly at the Ferrari 458 Italia and built around technology drawn from the racing team next door.

Design and engineering

The centrepiece was the MonoCell, a one-piece carbon-fibre tub made in a new process that cut moulding time from days to hours, allowing carbon construction at a price point where rivals still used aluminium. The 3.8-litre M838T twin-turbo V8 was developed with Ricardo, and the suspension abandoned conventional anti-roll bars entirely: Proactive Chassis Control linked the dampers hydraulically across the car, which gave it a ride quality no mid-engined rival could match while still controlling roll. Brake Steer, a system the F1 team had been banned from using, applied the inside rear brake to tighten cornering lines.

In production

The reviews respected it and did not love it. It was faster than a 458 in most measurable ways and less involving in every immeasurable one — the engine sounded industrial, the styling by Frank Stephenson was clean but anonymous, and buyers at that price were paying for theatre. McLaren responded quickly with more power, a louder exhaust option, a Spider version and, in 2012, a simplified name.

Legacy

Production ended in 2014 after around 3,400 cars. The 650S that replaced it was substantially the same vehicle with sharper styling and better calibration, and the MonoCell principle underpins McLaren road cars to this day.
