Origins

The car began in an airport departure lounge. Waiting for a flight out of Milan after the 1988 Italian Grand Prix, Gordon Murray put to Ron Dennis and Mansour Ojjeh the idea of McLaren building the best road car anyone had made, and sketched a three-seat cabin with the driver in the middle. Dennis agreed on one condition: it had to be uncompromised. Murray took that literally. The F1 used a carbon-fibre monocoque, the first road car to do so, and everything hung off it was scrutinised for mass — the toolkit was titanium, the wiring loom was designed rather than assembled, and the engine bay was lined with gold foil because gold reflects heat better than anything else available. There was no power steering, no traction control, no anti-lock braking and no turbocharging, all rejected on the grounds that they added weight or blurred response.

Design and engineering

The engine was BMW's. Murray had wanted Honda; when that failed he approached Paul Rosche at BMW Motorsport with a specification calling for a naturally aspirated V12 under a strict weight limit. Rosche came back over the weight target and well over the power figure, with the 6.1-litre S70/2. Peter Stevens shaped the body around Murray's packaging rather than the other way round, which is why the F1 looks compact and slightly under-dramatic next to the wedges of its era.

In production

Road testers ran out of superlatives, but the car sold slowly at a very high price into a collapsing early-1990s market, and only just over a hundred were built across all versions between 1992 and 1998. Murray had never wanted it to race. Customers did, and the F1 GTR that resulted won the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours outright on its first attempt, in the rain, finishing first, third, fourth and fifth against purpose-built prototypes.

Legacy

In 1998 a modified prototype, XP5, recorded just over 240 mph at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien track, making it the fastest production car in the world — a record that stood for years and that still belongs to the fastest naturally aspirated road car ever built. Values today run into eight figures. Murray's own attempt to revisit the formula, the GMA T.50, arrived three decades later with the same central seat and the same refusal to turbocharge.
